Sunday, October 22, This activity is past. The play is inspired from Rabidranath Tagore’s poem “Juta Abishkar” Invention of Shoes which later was put in a song by another famous composer Salil Chowdhury.
The cast consisted of 12 children aged between yrs. The poem is a satire reflecting how the rich and the abisshkar victimised the powerless. It also shows people can make a difference if united. Once upon a time, there was a King named Habuchandra who ruled India.
His chief abjshkar Gobuchandra always advised him and followed him everywhere. One day the King suddenly realised that the kingdom had too much dust which needs to be sorted out.
So, wise men in the court sat together and came up with a plan. They suggested sweeping the kingdom for couple of days. But it created a dust storm which annoyed the King very much. Then they tried different measures like pouring water to stop the storm which turned the dust into mud and the rivers dried out. They also suggested keeping the king indoors but none worked. Then they thought of covering the land with leather but it required cattle to be murdered and people started to revolt against this idea.
Finally the court decided to seek advice from the cobblers and leather workers.
One of the cobblers suggested the king to cover his feet which would keep dust away from his feet. The King was very impressed but denied to accept this genius plan came from a mere cobbler.

Such an idea should be coming from a King. In the end the cobbler is imprisoned as the kingdom hailed the King for inventing the shoes.
