It’s about as dark as it sounds, but there’s a certain draw to it I found I couldn’t tear myself away. Much like Thomas Hardy, Quiroga had a very depressing life. Most of his family and friends died before him, several from bizarre, freak accidents. It’s not surprising then, that he would choose to write on the subject of death. This is a collect I read this for a capstone class in college, and was surprised I enjoyed it. This is a collection of short stories all focused around death, and most of the characters die unexpectedly, in very freakish ways.

I think Quiroga was trying to find some connection to those he’d lost by writing about those types of accidents. While dark it’s definitely enlightening, degollaca I think worth the read. You might want to have something happy to read on degollaca side, though. While some of the stories were super creepy and thought-provoking, ultimately I didn’t find them unique enough to stand up against other masters in the genre.

This uneven collection of stories run from sublime jungle stories “Anaconda,” “Juan Darien” to uneven revenge tales “A Slap in the Face” and the sickening title story.
